The Regional Food Bank Workshop
I went to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma (RFBO) for a workshop to learn how to better obtain donations and volunteers.
It started about 8 in the morning with a breakfast and tours of the organization. They showed us how they import and export all of the food that they distribute to us. They also showed us other programs, such as their Food 4 Children program that gives food to school children that would otherwise go hungry.
The first session was about how to obtain donations. Everyone attended this session. The RFBO had a guest speaker tell about how he had learned that people respond well to narrative more than facts or figures. Donors want to change someone's life, not rack up numbers of turkeys collected.
The second session was about the RFBO's new online food order system and how receiving agencies will use it. The session answered basic questions about how to use the website. This session was helpful to many elderly workers that have been cut off by the digital divide.
For the third session, the participants separated into three groups and attended the session of their choice. The sessions were food safety and handling, obtaining food donations, and obtaining volunteers. Sandy, my friend from Mission Norman, and I went to the obtaining volunteers session. We learned that elderly, women, and disabled people are the primary volunteers at non-profits. People serving on community service can be useful in small amounts. If you can get a public figure, such as a sports team, support you it can help both you and the team. Social networking was also addressed. Mission Norman needs to start utilizing this medium more.
There were lots of other people from other food pantries there. I did a lot of networking with them. This is extremely helpful. Each event I attend with other agencies is like a job fair made just for me. I meet so many people in jobs that I would like to work in one day.

I had a meeting with a pastor today to discuss working together with Mission Norman. He said he would give an announcement about opportunities to serve at Mission Norman. I did some price research for a banner and media scanning.

I went to an Justice Alliance meeting. They had an event where different non-profit organizations that help the less fortunate gathered together and shared what each of them do and discussed how they could better help one another. It was very helpful and Mission Norman made a lot of contacts.

Spring “Break”
This week was Spring “Break.” It was not very much of a break for me. Instead of doing school work, I worked at my internship. I got a chance to do more than just desk work. I moved furniture, helped in the pantry, and moved some compost for the garden on top of my regular responsibilities. I got a chance to participate in more of the daily workings of the mission than I usually do. I really enjoyed it.

Week 9 Hours
March 15–21 AKA: Spring “Break”

I moved a bunch of furniture from one apartment to another during the first part of the day. I took furniture from Country Village Apartments, where I host a Bible study, and moved it to another apartment complex to a family that had no furniture at all. I also edited my press release and sent it to the mission director. Later that night I worked on the website. It is almost ready to be published. It is on its editing stage. After it is edited, I will publish it and the world can see my creation.

I attempted to send my website to my boss, Gene Barnes, for editing, but had trouble with it and fiddled with it for a while. I edited my press release with him, but it's still not done. This one is proving a lot more difficult than the last one to get it done. I worked on fund raising ideas, but I didn't get that far with everything else going on. Then I went and go get compost for our Community Garden that we are fixing up. That took up the rest of the day.

All because of a press release
On Monday I sent a press release to the Norman Transcript about Mission Norman's community garden. The press release was only about 200 words long and contained the bare information.
It not only made it into the paper on Tuesday, but it had a front page headline and my story was printed almost word for word on page 5! Mission Norman received three phone calls from people who were interested in working in or supporting the garden.
Then a news crew from OU called Mission Norman and requested to do a story over our garden. They came and interviewed our head gardener, Bruce Brown, and the director of Mission Norman, Gene Barnes. The story aired on the OU news program at 4:30.
It is quite exciting what a press release can do.

Community Party at Country Village
This Saturday I hosted a party at Country Village Apartments with Kayla, Jesus, and Bruce. I run a weekly Bible study there for children and adults, but no adults have been attending lately. To encourage more adults to attend I decided to host a community party in the apartments' club house.
The party went well. We had five adults attend and most of the children. We served them hot dogs for dinner and then just relaxed and talked while Jesus played with the children outside. The adults had a good time and we told them about our weekly Bible study.
The club house is on the second floor so a couple handicapped people were not able to attend. We brought them food after the party and invited them to the Bible study, which is on the first floor in a resident's apartment.
I think the awareness about our Bible study increased and people have a good perception of Mission Norman. Now I just have to convince them to act upon their good opinion.

Doing Something New
I am preparing to host a party at Country Village Apartments to boast attendance and become more involved with the community. Several children regularly attend the Bible study, but few adults regularly attend. Last week, no adults came at all.
I am planning a party to increase awareness about the Bible study among adults and to build positive feelings toward it. We are serving dinner and offering child services so that they do not have to worry about taking care of them.
Things have been going well at the Mission. I am working on the newsletter. We have a newsletter now, but it is short, hard to read, and has a lot of statistics without much explanation. The newsletter I will make will have feature stories, a calendar, and explanation to some of the statistics.

A Little Work and a Lot of Snow
I was not able to work very much this week because of the snow. I did some more work on the website, but not much else. I am spending more time on the website than I anticipated, but it is also becoming bigger and better than I expected. I have started to add content to the web page, but it still has a long way to go.
I am waiting on Michael and Jessica to finish profiles of the apartments that we have Bible Studies at and apartments where we want to have Bible Studies. These profiles will be used in the brochures, but I will post these on the website as well. They will add a lot of content and really show what Mission Norman does. I am excited about how we may utilize them. It will still be a while before Michael and Jessica finish, but I still have lots of work to do on the website and around the Mission to keep me busy in the mean time.

Week 1 Hours

I worked on the Mission website, designing the new layout and starting to code it.
Wednesday: 9:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
I continued to work on the website. I threw away some of yesterday's ideas and tried a few new ones
Thursday: 5:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
I hosted a Bible study at Country Village apartments. We played with the children and talked with adults and then had an adult and a children's Bible lesson. Afterward, we filled out a survey together to help create the brochure for Country Village apartments.

I worked on the website some more. I'm getting closer to being done with the lay out. Soon I will start to add some content.

My First Week
I have completed my first week at Mission Norman. It was a good week to start an internship. Mission Norman is creating brochures about apartment complexes that it hosts Bible studies at or wishes to hold Bible studies at. We will use the brochures to help us find more volunteers and possibly funds.
Michael, the Mission's secretary, had the idea that volunteers at Mission Norman should try to get their churches more involved with Mission Norman. Many of our volunteers would love it if their church was more involved with Mission Norman. They really care about Mission Norman and want to serve the poor in Norman so they want their friends to join them. Most of them, however, do not know how to effectively raise long term support in their churches. To help them gain this support, Michael decided to create brochures about what Mission Norman does to show the churches the good they can do.
I am not very involved in making the brochures, but as the PR intern, I will use them a lot. It is likely that I will present them to the pastors of churches that Mission Norman volunteers do not attend. I will also use the information in press releases and put them onto the website. My education in media and Public Relations also gives me good input to help put the brochures to more effective use.
I am excited about all we will do this year.
